Guide for Asbestos Bulk Sampling

Prioritize Safety

There are some precautions that should be followed while taking samples of potentially asbestos-containing bulk materials to prevent unwanted exposure to asbestos fibers.  The following sampling instructions are in accordance with the EPA recommended procedure for safe handling of potentially hazardous bulk samples.

  • When possible, materials should be sampled when not in use.
  • Use a dust mask or NIOSH-approved respirator if they are available while taking the sample.
  • If you don't have a dust mask, avoid creating and breathing in dust.
  • To help prevent creating any dust, you may spray water onto the material to be sampled.
  • Sample size should be at least a square inch.
  • Place each sample in a dry, clean Ziploc bag.
  • Label each bag if there's more than one sample.

How to submit samples

After collecting and placing each sample in a clean Ziploc bag.  Fill out a Chain of Custody (COC) form and submit it together with the samples.

Once payment has been arranged, your results will be emailed to you based on the Turnaround Time (TAT) marked on the COC.
